Interesting. I used IRC a whole bunch from the early 90s until around
the turn of the millennium. But I always considered mailing lists
superior. Mostly because almost all lists were archived and searchable.
IRC always seemed so ephemeral.

I think it depends on the channel. I've mostly hung out in channels
frequented by people I know IRL, so this has never been a problem.
